Life of Brian

Themes and Commentary

Religion

Given that Life of Brian is about a man who unwittingly has a very similar story and life to Jesus Christ, it's no surprise that this film is a big satire on religion. Brian is, against his will, worshipped as a messiah for imparting some basic wisdom and common sense, and is promptly oppressed and executed for his differences, despite the fact that he is a Roman.

Optimism

One of the major themes in Life of Brian appears to be optimism. The closing song, Bright Side of Life, reflects this well, although it could also just be interpreted as ironic, as the crucifixion victims are singing about positivity as they die a slow and painful death. Either way, it prompts the audience to appreciate the comedy and good parts of living, which most epics fail to emphasize.

British Culture & Politics

Monty Python is known for its surrealist comedy that also serves as commentary for then-current political situations and circumstances both within Britain and outside. British cultural references are littered throughout the film, and allusions to conflicts within the Middle East that were happening in the 70s-80s are constant as well.
