Gladiator

Themes & Commentary

Politics

Given that Gladiator came out in 2000, during a time of great political scandals in America, it's no surprise that the film depicts the majority of politicians as spoiled and corrupt, only seeking to serve themselves. But as Maximus defeats Commodus by the end of the movie, audiences are encouraged to resist the corrupt leaders of today's world (although, maybe not violently).

Love

The depiction of love and sexuality within Gladiator is one of the most interesting and disgusting aspects of the movie. Audiences are shown how much Maximus cares for his wife and son; he only really lives for the chance to see them again. And, compared to the twisted, incestuous 'love' Commodus has for his sister and nephew, Maximus' love is all the more precious and admirable.

Life & Death

Surprisingly, this epic has lots of imagery and themes surrounding life and death, and even the in-between state our souls purportedly reach when we're close to death. As Maximus runs into death throughout the entire movie, he has visions of walking through a peaceful wheatfield towards a gate. When he finally dies at the end, it's portrayed as the best ending, since he's finally allowed to be with his family again, and he's already defeated Commodus.
